Vastu Shastra Basics: 10 Rules Every Homeowner Should Know

The Science of Harmonious Living

Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian science of architecture and building, translates literally to the "science of architecture". It focuses on integrating nature, relative functions of various parts of the structure, and ancient beliefs utilizing geometric patterns, symmetry, and directional alignments. By harmonizing these elements, Vastu brings balance and positive energy to your living space.

Here are the fundamental rules of Vastu Shastra that you should consider before finalizing your floor plan.

1. The Auspicious Entrance

The main entrance is not just point of entry for your family, but also for cosmic energy. The most highly regarded directions for the main door are North, East, or North-East. These directions capture the morning sun and magnetic energy from the North Pole, filling the home with positivity.

2. The Heart of the Home: The Kitchen

According to Vastu, the Fire element (Agni) governs the kitchen. The absolute best location for your kitchen is the South-East corner of your home. If this isn't possible, the North-West is the second-best alternative. Avoid placing the kitchen in the North-East, South-West, or Center of the home, as this disrupts familial harmony.

3. The Master Bedroom Placement

The master bedroom represents stability and strength, typically occupied by the head of the family. Vastu strongly recommends placing the master bedroom in the South-West corner. Furthermore, the bed should be placed so that your head points South or East while sleeping.

4. The Sanctity of the Puja Room

If you're incorporating a prayer or Puja room, its placement is crucial. The North-East corner (Ishan Kon) is considered the most sacred area of the house, governed by the element of water. Keep this area clean, clutter-free, and well-lit.

5. Bathrooms and Drainage

Water elements and waste disposal are heavily regulated in Vastu to prevent the draining of wealth from the home. Bathrooms should ideally be built in the North-West or West zones. Ensure that bathroom doors are kept closed and toilet seats face either North or South.

Why It Matters

While some view Vastu as purely spiritual, much of it revolves around practical solar and magnetic science. For example, East-facing entrances maximize morning sunlight (a natural disinfectant), while South-West master bedrooms are historically shielded from intense afternoon heat. By incorporating these basics, you create a space that feels inherently balanced.
